The holidays offer an opportunity to check in on how your older loved ones may be doing physically and mentally.

Ready for food, family, and fun? The holidays are a time when family gathers, perhaps one of the only times throughout the year. As we approach the holiday season, it's a good time to think about what this may mean for older loved ones. Sure, they will love seeing the grandkids run around and dig into the apple pie, but it also may be difficult. Are they declining? Are they recovering from a surgery or procedure?

This may be a time where generations can sit and discuss important topics like estate planning, housing options if a change needs to happen, or cognitive abilities.

Here are a couple of signs to look for in an aging loved one:

  • Is their house messy and cluttered when it was always spotless in prior years?
  • Is the mailbox in good shape? Sometimes this can be a sign that driving and depth perception is off.
  • Did they forget crucial ingredients in several recipes or have trouble following a recipe?

Be sure to take the opportunity to check on how your aging loved ones are doing this holiday season.
